--- title: "past.dev for Hermes Agent" description: "A memory provider for Hermes Agent: recall before each message, and conversations kept in past.dev." canonical: https://past.dev/docs/plugins/hermes last-updated: 2026-10-12 --- # past.dev for Hermes Agent > A memory provider for Hermes Agent: recall before each message, and conversations kept in past.dev. Product: past.dev Plugins. Source: https://past.dev/docs/plugins/hermes ### Install the Hermes provider Run these lines in the Python environment that Hermes runs in. ```terminal pip install "git+https://github.com/pastdotdev/hermes-plugin" hermes config set memory.provider pastdotdev hermes pastdotdev setup ``` 1. `pip install` installs the provider beside Hermes. 2. `hermes config set memory.provider pastdotdev` makes past.dev the memory of Hermes. `hermes memory setup` offers past.dev too and runs the same steps. 3. `hermes pastdotdev setup` asks for the project API key and your identity. 4. `hermes pastdotdev status` shows the connection and the last sessions that were sent. `PAST_API_KEY` and `PAST_IDENTITY` in the environment work too. If another past.dev plugin already connected this machine, the provider uses that connection. ### What the Hermes provider sends - Recall: the message you send, with secrets removed, as the query. Nothing is recalled until an identity is set. - Memory: what you and Hermes said in each session, without tool calls or their results. A session is sent when it ends, when it is compacted or when you switch sessions. - Cron runs, subagents and memory flushes are never sent. > **Messaging gateways** > > The provider is off on a messaging gateway such as Telegram, Slack or Discord. past.dev recalls as one identity, so on a gateway that several people use, one person's memory would reach another person. If the gateway serves only you, set `"gateway": true` in `~/.past/config.json`. Source code and issues: [pastdotdev/hermes-plugin](https://github.com/pastdotdev/hermes-plugin).
